She will consider how to recognize gambling problems and diagnosing gambling disorders.Helen Lynch Young will provide an overview of best practices for clinicians, using the umbrella framework of problem gambling, and examine its identification, progression, and impact on individuals and families. She will review DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, key differences between gambling and substance use disorders, and current trends in expanding access to online and sports betting. Risk factors, cognitive distortions, and gambling-related harms – including financial trauma, betrayal trauma, and family system disruption – are explored alongside evidence-based screening and assessment tools. Presenters Helen Lynch Young, LCSW-R has over 25 years of experience in behavioral health and is the owner of The Therapeutic Wellness Practice, LCSW, PLLC. She provides evidence-informed treatment for adults with mental health, substance use, and gambling disorders, including services for individuals and families impacted by problem gambling. Ms. Young is a New York State OASAS-approved provider authorized to conduct court-accepted substance use and gambling evaluations and provides clinical supervision, including supervision for Problem Gambling Resource Center clinicians, with a focus on ethical practice, trauma-informed care, and integrated treatment of co-occurring conditions.Rachel Lauria has served as the Bureau Director of Treatment and Recovery at the New York Council on Problem Gambling for the past seven years. In this role, Ms. Lauria’s has taken a deep dive into understanding gambling addiction, prevention, and recovery to implement resources across New York State that support those in need. Ms. Lauria has a BSW and 20 years' experience working in the field of social work.
